Tricky one this…
Most of the gigs I’ve ever done have been as a backing musician. Backing in a band, backing a choir, backing an event. Solo gigs have certainly happened in the context of a social or dinner event and therefore I have been a side attraction at best.
Actually, this suits me to a point. Playing wallpaper music is something I can do easily and without too much fuss. It’s perfect for pre-wedding music, or during the reception. Recording it can be a bit fraught, because there’s a lack of discrete shaping and an emphasis on long layered phrasing to provide continuous background noise. Live, however, it’s good fun.
I’m thinking about moving slightly to the side and playing with soundscapes. Different but similar enough to attract me. I’m also coming back around to my favourite contrast – static visual art vs. fluid aural work.
So, I’m in the market for some collaboration if you’re interested.
