the story of me

Andrew at the piano, smiling

My name is Andrew, although it's shortened to Andii for everyday use. I've been breathing since 1980 and playing the piano since 1985 without much of a break to speak of in either activity. The writing of music fascinates me, and I love to see something worked out in detail and performed in real life. I may be a performing musician, but I find it equally exciting to compose for others. I'm completing my teacher training this year at a school in south Birmingham.

My main instruments are piano and voice (baritone) but I have some knowledge of bass guitar, drum kit, trombone and I'm totally inept with the didjeridu despite years of ownership.

I live near Walsall in the West Midlands with my family and piano (not the one pictured, mine's an upright).

Things I have done

I'm a fairly competent pianist and keyboard player, so opportunities have arisen from time to time. I provided keys on tracks for a local band by the name of Vender, who sadly are no longer. I still play keyboards live, with a few gentlemen of my acquaintance. We all give up our real lives for a few precious hours and rock the night away. My claim to fame in this respect is that I can play the synth solo from Van Halen's "Jump".

I wrote a piece called "Opus Pocus" for a wind quintet in 2006, which was performed at the University of Wolverhampton by some final year students. You can find a version of Opus Pocus in the Composition section of the site, and I'm still (justifiably, I feel) proud of it.
